It’s nice to meet you! I’m glad you’re here. My name is Michael Sykes and I’m a media professional. I’ve lived in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for my entire life and I absolutely love it.
I was born to be a journalist. I love being, as I like to say, a “professional questioner”. I worked at the Prince George’s Sentinel, but now I’m running through Southern Maryland at the Maryland Independent covering government affairs.
Although my focus there has been politics, I’ve covered sports, zoning, budgetary matters, municipal festivals and a plethora of other things. My versatility is what keeps me going. I’m always open to covering something new–I welcome it!
Sports has always been my first love. My goal is to become one of the best sports journalists in the country and open doors for others who have similar goals. I’ve been writing about sports, particularly the NBA, for the last five years at different stops.
Last, but definitely not least, I am currently enrolled in the Interactive Journalism program at American University. I plan to use every single skill and every ounce of time I have at this university to further improve my skills as a journalist and improve my handle of technical data as well as different coding languages.
I’m going to be the best I can be, and I want you to come along with me. My interests and experiences are now yours. I hope you enjoy.
